I learned a lot on this assignment.  I felt I had a pretty good handle on the basic concepts of balance going into this class, but I still came out with a new understanding.  The materials and techniques were new.  I had not used the dry-on-dry rubber cement method before, and it works amazingly well. Mining shapes from photos is new to me as well, and it provided ideas and designs for this project that I would not have otherwise come up with. I think I executed this assignment well, and I'm looking forward to what's next.

Formative Exercises:

The solid square exercise was done twice. The first version is on the left with many pieces and overlaps. The second, simpler version is on the right.

Early version of radial balance using shape mining.

Further revisions with shape mining.

Radial balance sketch. Math for 5 spokes on right-hand side.

Two versions of bilateral symmetry using same mined shape. Lower version used for final.

Full-size sketches with shape-mined reference pictures.

Template cut from .020 styrene sheet used to ensure radial symmetry.
